4 in 10 births worldwide not attended by doctor or health professional
In developing countries maternal mortality is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age. Women and girls lack access to the most basic health care services and are at the highest risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
More than half a million expectant and new mothers die each year, most in Africa and Asia where obstetrical and post-natal care is often unavailable and many pregnancies are complicated by HIV. The number of maternal deaths has remained largely unchanged over the past two decades and has made it more difficult to reduce child mortality.
A newborn has less chance of surviving if its mother dies during or shortly after childbirth.

Perinatal mortality and morbidity is an international problem and the solution lies partialy in the acces to obstetrical care and a lot more on the care of Midwives..
Most of the problems in developing countries have to do more with lack of clean drinking water and poor nutrition. Which are the causes of most problems during pregnancy and birth. Holistic midwives often prove to be the best solution to keep pregnancy safe... But, while looking at the great problems in the developing countries lets not forget the problems in developed countries. millions of women are scared by the treatment they get in hospitals. Many protocols that have been proven useless or even harmful , are alive and well in European, asian, latin american "modern" hospitals. This constitues a type of violence against women. There is a worrying epidemic of inductions, c,sections (over 98 percent in some regions), episiotomies, uneeded intrumental deliveries, hemorrages that have iatrogenic origins.
