It is now more dangerous to be a woman than to be a soldier in modern
This article was submitted by Deborah Underdown from CARE International (A former UN Peacekeeping Operations commander in DR Congo).
Rape and sexual violence are a crime and during conflict women are at an increased risk - but it doesn't end there. Even when a conflict has ended, women are still not sufficiently supported or protected.
The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution, 1820, to protect women from sexual violence and demanded that all parties to armed conflict immediately take appropriate measures to protect civilians, including women and girls, from all forms of sexual violence.
Despite the resolution being adopted by the Security Council women are still at risk all over the world. This needs to end.
In June 2009 Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General, will be writing a report on the implementation of the resolution.
We want Resolution 1820 to:
* Ensure that peacekeepers are given the right training, mandate and capabilities to protect women who live in countries affected by conflict
* Ensure that funding is sustained to help women cope with the longer-term health and psycho-social consequences of rape
* Ensure the safety of survivors who take a stand against impunity - many women face risks if they participate in any police or justice procedures
* Support is provided to affected communities to reverse the spread of sexual and gender-based violence
We want Sir John Sawers to know that women around the world need to be protected.

Women from Kosova experienced war and all the suffering before during and after it so we do know best the necessity of supporting and protecting women and girls in conflict areas
