Media not noticing rise in women bloggers
Women now comprise half of all bloggers. They are using new media tools including blogs, podcasts, vlogs (video blogs) and other information communication technologies (ICTs) as a means of self-expression (craft bloggers), connection to community (mommy bloggers), political organizing (the “netroots”), and citizen journalism.
But when it comes to controlling and driving the media and calling the shots, are women see a celluloid ceiling in media sector? Women are more likely than men to name television as their more important source of news while men are more likely than women to name newspapers and the Internet. Men are also more likely than women to follow the news closely every day (76% vs 69%), value new technologies for getting their news (60% vs 52%), and abandoning a distrusted news source (31% vs 25%).
One of the most important tasks is to achieve true equality and diversity in the media because women still only represent 14.7% of boards of directors within mainstream media corporations. Around 90% of radio program directors are men; 85% of the general managers they report to are men. Women comprise 15% of executive leaders, and 12% of board member in top communications companies.
