Belinda Abbott
Who are you and what do you do at Deloitte?
I am a Chartered Accountant and a senior manager with the Deloitte
AIM Transaction Services team within our Audit & Assurance
division. Since arriving in London, my work has varied and has
included AIM listings, proposals, client secondments, audit and
other transaction advisory projects. My days vary significantly
from liaising with clients, team management and discussions, company
analysis, report writing, reviewing and being involved with internal
business development, training and division events. There is also
the very important continual banter to keep on top of with my
colleagues!
Why Deloitte? What motivated you to join us in the UK?
I joined Deloitte fresh out of University and never thought
I would still be here eight years later! I completed my qualification
in Melbourne and being keen to work overseas, spent 5 months working
with Deloitte San Francisco - a brilliant experience! Following
a couple of years back in Melbourne I finally pursued my desire
to work in London. It was an opportunity that met my career development
aspirations and as a result I landed in the London office in February
2006 … and the work has more than met my expectations!
Have you had a mentor (or role model) who contributed to your
success as a professional? How did that person impact your career?
My mentor is one of our partners. He is a person who is able to
replace his partner hat with a career mentoring hat and offer
direct and honest feedback and advice, opportunities to consider,
and also advice on how to redirect energy and focus during frustrating/discouraging
times and turn these experiences into opportunities.
Tell us a bit more about yourself?
I love living in London, the travel and meeting a great bunch
of diverse people along the way. I am career focused but above
that - family and friends focused – I am a big sister, little
sister, a soon to be aunt, girlfriend and a great friend (I hope!)
to my friends. I enjoy being a member of sporting teams and generally
like getting involved. I am also a home owner / landlord. I firmly
believe there is never a better time than today to do something
new! And dark chocolate, red wine and good cheese makes for a
better day - they are laden with medicinal benefits…
