In Sudan, women's rights have been marginalized and ignored by all past post- independence governments. The lack of clear commitment towards protecting women's rights has been a major obstacle to the women's movement progress. Equality for women has always been a priority in the past and remains so in the current women movement’s agenda.
IWD is celebrated annually throughout the world to provide an opportunity to focus upon and remember the struggle of women. Since its inception in 1998 Salmmah Women’s Resource Center has always participated in annual celebrations of the international women's day and had played a leading role organizing many events in collaboration with other civil society organizations.
This year Salmmah in collaboration with the Sudanese Women Empowerment for Peace (SuWEP) will coordinate a day long festival on Friday 8th of March 2013 at the Nubian Club - Khartoum. The festival aims to promote solidarity and develop Sudanese women's sense of initiative and creativity. In the spirit of celebrating IWD; the event aims to improve cooperation and increase consciousness of women’s issues.
