The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The IET provides a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology in the world.
Women are in the minority when it comes to the engineering industry. This contributes to the skills shortage that parts of the UK are facing.
More action needs to be taken to change the perception of engineering and activly encourage women into engineering.
We recognise that the status and advancement of women into engineering needs to be raised.
The IET Women’s Network is a new development that aims to support under-represented groups within engineering, primarily women in engineering. The IET are taking a more active role by engaging with their women members / non-members in order to create a sense of community and support, offering them a sense of empowerment.
We have created a Facebook page for the Women’s Network that will to keep you up-to-date with news and up-coming events, as well as having an opportunity to comment and participate in discussions.
We run a number of events aimed at helping women to overcome barriers in the workplace and ultimately support them in their career. These events are also used to facilitate networking. Networking is valuable in terms of making new contacts and sharing experiences. This alone creates a sense of empowerment.
We offer Professional Registration courses to support women in their career progression.
We sponsor the Women's Engineering Society (WES) who runs initiatives, specifically for women in engineering.
