CIT’s Empowering Women 2020 Festival to Showcase Female Leaders and Role Models in celebration of International Women’s Day
CIT Empowering Women 2020, Cork Institute of Technology’s festival in celebration of International Women’s Day, will take place on Monday 2nd March from 12.30 to 2.30 pm in the Nexus Hall, Student Centre, CIT.
The 2019 International Women’s Day event, which attracted over 400 attendees, was a tremendous success with CIT being awarded Highly Commended Status in the 2019 International Women’s Day competition for our International Women’s Day Best Practice activities.
CIT Empowering Women 2020 aims to further broaden the horizons of female students and staff and highlight opportunities for their future careers. The event will present female role models, from both the CIT Alumni community and industry, who will share their career path stories and provide tips and advice for students on how they can embark on their own successful career journeys.
CIT is delighted to be organising this festival as a core value of the Institute is to support, encourage and nurture inclusivity, diversity, and equality within the student, staff, and alumni community. CIT is committed to the Athena SWAN initiative and has recently achieved the coveted Athena SWAN Bronze Award. The Athena SWAN Charter was established to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in the higher education and research STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) domain. The Charter has since been expanded to recognise work undertaken in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business and Law.
Praising the CIT Empowering Women International Women’s Day initiative, Dr Barry O’Connor, President of CIT said: “In CIT’s Strategic Plan 2018-2023, inclusivity is specifically listed as the first of five core values. Since my appointment, I have worked with and supported colleagues to achieve increased diversity in key decision-making bodies and I very much look forward to welcoming all speakers, students and guests to this festival which will showcase female leaders from across CIT and the wider Cork Industry, Enterprise and Community sectors.”
CIT Empowering Women 2020 is celebrating the vital role women play in promoting and nurturing CIT students, alumni and staff. According to Norma Welch, Chair of the CIT International Women's Day Committee: “This year’s line-up of inspiring speakers is a wonderful testament to all the powerful female mentors and role models, both within CIT and in the broader community, that our students have access to on a regular basis and this event will be a fantastic networking opportunity for all.”
CIT Empowering Women 2020 is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty event and is organised by colleagues from across the Institute. The event provides a CPD opportunity for staff and postgraduate students. This event is being organised in association with CIT Innovation Week during which there will be a week-long series of events taking place on campus.
