SNBE Beacon Lecture - IWD 2026

We are planning an event in Queen's University Belfast School of the Built and Natural Environment called the Beacon Lecture  (each year this coincides with International woman's day) where we invite a leading female (usually QUB Alumni) to come to talk to the staff and students of the entire Department.

This year we have invited Maria O'Loan an environmental planning barrister from a leading commercial law firm to speak to our group.

We hope to extend the invite out to an external networking group called 'Women in Planning'.

Maria is a leading light who I have nominated for the Legal 500 ESG Award and she is very supportive of the theme of 'Give to Gain', so we love to get the pack to really brand our event as linked to IWD.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific. IWD is a movement, powered by the collective efforts of all.
