Calligrapher Merike Tamm in Estonia uses her creative talent to support IWD 2025

Creatives play an important role in elevating International Women's Day (IWD) through helping amplify awareness raising. Via their creative contributions, audiences worldwide are engaged through collective action to help forge gender equality.

Each year the IWD Lettering Challenge, in association with the global Typism community, calls for creative designs that support an annual IWD focus and showcase the impressive talent of creators.

Here, we shine a spotlight on one such creative, Merike Tamm, and showcase her IWD 2025 Acceleration Action design.

Discussing the concept behind her IWD Accelerate Action design

When asked about the concept behind her design, Merike says: “We live in a rapid time, we should always accelerate action, but in which direction should we go?”

Creating a unique piece of art

When creating her artwork, Merike wrote ACCELERATE in a modern, fast, stretched copperplate style, while the word ACTION was done with brush pens imitating the brisk movement and sliding of the lines. 

“I mixed it all up in Photoshop, but I could also do this idea completely by hand,” explains Merike.

Sharing the meaning of Accelerate Action

Merike says the concept of Accelerate Action means to her, that sometimes we use our internal energy flow, and sometimes external pressure comes from somewhere else.” Both sources are needed to accelerate action for gender equality.

Merike believes that International Women’s Day provides a useful important opportunity to reflect and focus on the importance of the roles women undertake."
