Open Banking knows that progress comes when we invest in others: Give to Gain
Progress towards gender equality requires commitment from individuals, communities, and groups worldwide.
Groups can play a powerful role in shaping inclusive cultures by giving opportunities, so women in the workforce and across communities can gain.
Marking International Women’s Day (IWD), companies have reflected on how they can Give To Gain by investing in women through mentorship, visibility, and support, and how this can drive meaningful change.
A great example of this is from Open Banking Limited (OBL), the group behind the UK’s open banking ecosystem.
Open Banking Limited is the standard for open innovation, the convenor and standards body helping the industry build products and services that deliver better outcomes for people and businesses.
“The theme this year, Give To Gain, is a reminder that progress comes when we invest in others - by sharing time, opening doors and creating space for diverse voices. At OBL, we’re proud to celebrate the women whose leadership and contribution shape our organisation and the wider Open Banking industry. When women are supported, everyone benefits. To the women across OBL, the open banking ecosystem, fintech and beyond who are driving change every day," said OBL.
Be the heroine of your own story
IWD saw OBL create an inspiring video spotlighting women in its community, and highlighting their thoughts about the Give to Gain campaign theme focus.
A highly impressive and accomplished woman in industry, OBL Chair & Trustee Marion King [pictured above], commented: "This year's theme for inspiring women is to give and to gain. And I guess, what for me, that really means is giving your time. As women, we must be generous with our time and our experience. But my message, I think for today, is one of self worth and authenticity. You can't live somebody else's life. Look up to role models and pull inspiration from individuals and the things you admire, but live your own life, create your own stories, and be who you are. It’s about being authentic. It’s about being the heroine of your own story."
Seeking out like-minded women
OBL Ecosystem Engagement Director Mel Lazarus added: "What I’ve learned over the years is to embrace my unique female energy and understand what it brings to the table. I’ve also become more deliberate about seeking out like-minded women and joining professional communities that uplift and support you. Trust me, the sisterhood is alive and well if you go looking for it. I love International Women’s Day because it’s a chance to celebrate all the talented women in your team, organization, or network. The theme this year is Give to Gain, and for me that means recognising that growth isn’t something you do on your own. When women are supported, everyone benefits. I think that’s the real meaning of Give to Gain."
Using one's unique voice
OBL Risk & Controls Director Kim McLean also shared her thoughts on what comes to mind when she considers the theme Give To Gain.
"Use your voice. I’ve spent my career in rooms where I wasn’t the majority, sometimes the only woman, sometimes the only one with a different view. In those moments, it can be tempting to stay quiet. But quiet doesn’t create progress. So here’s what I believe, if you’re thinking it, say it. If you see a risk, call it. If you see something differently, share it. Don’t shrink yourself to make others comfortable, and don’t mistake being different for being wrong. You don’t need a title to lead with your voice. Give your voice, and we all gain together."
Giving feedback and visibility
For OBL Head of Ecosystems Services Helen Vincent, Give to Gain is a "really simple"concept.
"None of us get where we are alone. At some point, everyone needs a helping hand - whether that’s a recommendation, time to run through a script, a shoulder to cry on, or a gentle nudge in the right direction. My call to action is simple: give intentionally. Give feedback. Give encouragement. Give visibility. Because every small act of support helps accelerate gender equality. When women rise, the organization rises with us," explained Helen.
Open Banking Limited portrays a strong and continuing commitment to Give to Gain as it continues to step forward in solidarity for International Women's Day and beyond.
