2 x Olympic Gold Medallist Swimmer, Former British, Commonwealth, European, Olympic and world record holder in the 800m Freestyle

Rebecca Adlington is a former Olympic swimmer, who won two gold medals and two bronze medals in the Olympics for the 400m and 800m freestyle. Rebecca is deemed one of the most successful swimmers in Olympic history, having won four Olympic medals and set World, British, Olympic and European Records for the 800m freestyle. Rebecca began when she was at school, benefitting from the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence Award. Rebecca first represented Britain at the 2008 Olympics, becoming the first British swimmer to claim more than one Gold at a single Olympic Games.

Since her incredible debut at the 2008 Olympics, Rebecca has achieved two World Championship titles in LC and SC, an LC European Championship title and two Commonwealth Games Gold medals. She later returned to represent Team GB at the 2012 Olympic Games, claiming two Bronze Olympic medals to complete her collection. Rebecca announced that she would not be competing at the 2016 Olympic Games, and retired from professional swimming. Following her retirement from swimming in 2013, Rebecca has become a media personality and is a regular contributor on television shows such as The One Show, This Morning, and Good Morning Britain, as well as working as a swimming pundit for the BBC.

Outside of swimming, Rebecca has also been involved in charity work, working as an Ambassador of the Encephalitis Society after her sister suffered from encephalitis. She has also been the recipient of countless awards, such as the Sports Journalists’ Association Sportswoman of the Year Award 2008 and nomination for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2008. She was also appointed OBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list and was awarded an Honorary Degree of Master of Arts from the University of Nottingham. The Sherwood Swimming Baths in Rebecca’s hometown have also been renamed in Rebecca’s honour – the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.
