Invest in Girls
Invest in Girls teaches high school girls financial concepts, exposes them to
professional women role models, and introduces them to financial services
companies and career paths in finance to empower them to become tomorrow’s
leaders. Our vision is to give all girls access to financial education and exposure
to careers in finance and the financial services industry.
IIG was founded in 2010 by a group of women
passionate about financial empowerment for girls and bridging the gap in gender
leadership in Financial Services.
We believe that financial knowledge builds confidence in girls and managing their personal finances sets them up to be successful in their future. Exposing them to successful women role models working in financial services can will an interest in pursuing a career in the industry. Our core model delivers a blended approach to personal finance and the world of financial services careers. Many of our girls have had the opportunity to pursue internships in financial services as a result of particpating in our program.
Our model is based on a three dimensional approach: 1) leading
workshops to educate girls on core financial concepts 2) providing them with
mentoring program that exposes them to a wide range of female business
leaders 3) bringing girls on industry exposure trips to "demystify" the financial
services industry and help them envision careers in business. IIG's program is a
three-year experience for high school girls in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades
because we know this is the “tipping point” for most girls to engage in their
personal financial literacy and to pursue an education and/or career in
economics/math/finance and STEM. Girls often receive their first paychecks,
begin to make personal spending decisions and plan for college tuition in their
high-school years. Personal finance becomes tangible and actionable, so if they
have positive exposure to the industry at this age, we believe IIG can encourage
girls to recognize opportunities over the long-term and make meaningful change
in gender diversify in the industry.
Over the years we have connected our girls to Financial Services Institutions
like Fidelity Investments, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Social Security
Administration. During these trips, our girls met women leaders and had the
opportunity to network with their peers, helping them build comfort and
confidence with career paths in the industry. Our over arching goal is to create
an ecosystem that supports girls and women in the financial services industry, by
empowering young women and enabling women already in the industry to have a
platform to mentor through.
IIG currently works with over 750 girls in 6 states and 12 schools and are continuing to grow and expand our programming.
We continue to explore opportunities to engage more women leaders in the
industry to leverage the model that we have built to magnify the impact for girls
globally.
