Supporting financial inclusion

Hikmet Ersek, President and Chief Executive Officer, Western Union

At Western Union (WU), International Women’s Day has special resonance.

Of the 150 million people who send or receive money each year through WU, a majority are women.

Women are also steadily increasing their presence in the world of small business, paving the way for others to follow.

We are proud of the role we play in supporting financial inclusion by connecting people through money movement, and of the support we provide to women’s education through the Western Union Foundation.

Yet we know that if we’re really going to help women rise, we have to look inside as well as outside.

Women are a critical talent pool across the globe & will be important in driving Western Union’s future success.

Across Western Union’s global workforce, 50% of our employees are women, and two of our nine board members are women.

At the leadership level, women are still trailing men, however the percentage is increasing.

We’ve created a change program called Women@WU. Its mandate is to create an action plan to promote women’s success at WU, through recruiting, mentoring, promoting, & measuring progress, while fostering a culture of greater inclusiveness.

I am inspired by WU’s female customers and employees, and I’m committed to increasing gender diversity at all levels of our company."
